Thanks for the comment JJ! Sorry to hear about your close call. I ride on Margaret Ave. from Union to Queen St. daily. I'm not sure why the lines faded so quickly. I hope they reprint them soon!

I get pretty worked up when I see people not use the specified bike lanes while I'm driving. I can go from shaking my head to yelling at them (with all my windows up of course) because I see sidewalk biking just a terrible idea overall. The only time I find it acceptable is if you're biking with a young one beside you. It's a pretty big pet peve of mine, the way I see it is that if people don't use these designated bike lanes - who's going to build them. I'd like to see bike lanes on King street between downtown and uptown - I biked that stretch last weekend, and while most people pulled into the next lane, there were still others who didn't bother pulling over (when they clearly had room) and just drove right by me as if I wasn't even there :).

With bikes being all over the place, I can understand why they should be on the road - I think the police should enforce the bike law, and at the same time, have more bike lanes so that there is no excuse to be driving on the side walk.

In your case though, I'd do much of the same thing - Precious cargo, is indeed precious cargo.

My bike rack at work is just horrible.... I can't find them but they are atrocious! (i'll post a photo soon) - The pro big pros is that it's well covered and in a very high traffic area, also seen by the security desk, the one out back has no hope in seeing my bike locked to is - it's a terrible bike rack in a 'emergency exit' area that no one walks by - under an over hand and feel like I could get mugged there... haha :)

I just found your blog! Muahaha :) and found this post! I use these lanes to ride from Bruce Street to Manulife by Conestoga and back everyday! (Just started biking 2 weeks ago!) . I agree with those islands, I already had a car cut me off while I was in the bike lane - I was really close to following him when he decided to turn into GT! haha - but other than that, I LOVE bike lanes, I just wish they were everywhere. Expect me to be a regular commenter now! :D

I once saw a cop tell someone riding on the sidewalk (King St, downtown Kitchener) to get off their bike or get off the road. But that's one exception among hundreds of times I've seen people riding bikes along that same sidewalk and others without any notice from cops.

It's frustrating when I'm a pedestrian because I know that road is wonderfully bikeable, so there's no good reason that I should have to move to make room for a cyclist on the sidewalk.

Hello, I have really enjoyed your blog. I am thinking about buying the Trek Allant. I am female, 1metre 69 cm and they have a male frame (sized 17.5, which I am pretty sure is OK for me) in my local shop which is heavily discounted. It is over a third less than the female step-through frame, which brings it neatly within my budget as I am new to cycling and must buy other important stuff too (lights, panniers, chain and a helmet, which is compulsory for insurance purposes here in London). I intend to use the bike for a daily commute which is 20km in total (10 each way). My question is whether I should buy the diamond frame bike. Will this 'male' frame be detrimental in any, way given the long commute? Many thanks :)

I did a post a few days ago on the mall down the road from me, and how they re-did their bike parking:
http://bicyclestc.blogspot.ca/2013/04/fairview-mall-parking.html
The one in the pictures 6 and 7 down I like. They hold a number of bikes and are fairly secure.

I despise these ones, which unfortunately my grocery store has. IMO a big "avoid" to businesses...That is if they even produce these kind anymore.

One more thing I'd add to location is, *if possible* put the racks where they are covered. The old Zellers left their bike rack in the open. When Walmart took over they placed it under an "overhang" by the entrance (pictures in the first link I posted).
