I was listening to my favourite podcast the other day and I was surprised and excited to hear that the guest was Trevor Vam Hemert from Pedal to Petal. This company is based in Victoria BC and they have identified and exploited a unique niche in the composting market. Their main goal is to gather and distribute as much compostable material as possible, with a twist. They do it all using used and recycled bicycles, with home-made bike trailers, using re-purposed wooden pallets to store and compost the kitchen waste. In other words, they have a minimal footprint on the environment.
The cyclists go door to door to customers, pick up the compostable material and transport it to compost hosts. These hosts are provided with compost bins (made from the pallets) that are rodent proof. The hosts can use as much of the compost as they want for their own projects. The rest goes to SPIN farms throughout the area. They make their money, and profits, from the customers who want to have their compost picked up at their doorstep.
I could tell you more about it, but I’ll let Trevor explain it better. The podcast is here.
