How often do you ride your bicycle? If you do, why do you ride?

I have a two-year old daughter, Isabella, and my wife and I are hoping to teach her how to ride a bike in the near future. Family bike rides are something that we are really looking forward to, and we want to teach Isabella that bicycles are a green mode of transportation, with the benefit of being a great form of exercise.

What are the top improvements needed in this riding to make bicycling better?

I am big supporter of policies that will encourage safe and affordable cycling here in Kitchener-Waterloo and across Ontario.    Infrastructure improvements and having dedicated bike lanes everywhere would be tremendous, but it’s not going to happen overnight. We need to explore developing a coordinated plan provincially and with municipalities to connect existing routes so that a person can get anywhere in Waterloo Region safely, enjoyably, and efficiently.

Just as importantly, I think all road users need to work together to improve attitudes about sharing the road for everyone’s safety and enjoyment. I also believe education is the key.  For example, the province contributed to a great commercial that I saw on TV a few weeks ago about sharing the road. For those who are interested, it can be found here: http://www.sharetheroad.ca/

Which of the recommendations in the coroners report caught your attention and why?

I would like to thank Dr. McCallum, Chief Coroner of Ontario, and Dr. Dan Cass, Deputy Chief Coroner-Investigation for their thoughtful advice and recommendations on how to improve cycling safety in Ontario.  My heart goes out to the families who have lost loved ones. I support the principles in the Chief Coroner’s recommendations.  Particularly, his recommendation that Ministry of Transportation driver handbooks be updated to ensure drivers know the rules of the road pertaining to cyclists so they’re not caught in a situation where they don’t know who has the right of way.

How will you advocate on behalf of this riding’s cyclists at Queen’s Park?

I know how important cycling is for Ontarians, as a way to travel and as part of an environmentally friendly, healthy, active lifestyle.   That’s why I support moving forward with updating Ontario’s cycling policy and carefully reviewing the Coroner’s recommendations as part of that update.   Ontario Liberals will continue to support community-based cycling education programs, pave shoulders where it’s safe and practical and look at ways to keep cyclists safe on our roads.

Where’s the Ontario version of la route verte? Closely related to where is our provincial master cycling plan?

Quebec’s ‘la route verte’ is a great model that Ontario can learn from.  I’ll be a strong advocate for that type of cycling infrastructure, balanced against other priorities.  I would be happy to discuss this with you further.

Will you commit to re-introducing the Sales Tax exemption for bicycles costing under $1000, and for bicycle safety equipment, in the form of partial HST exemption?

I am happy to discuss with you further any policies that will encourage safe and affordable cycling here in Kitchener-Waterloo and across Ontario.  My focus is protecting the gains we’ve made in education and health care and delivering on the Ontario Liberal plan to balance the budget and strengthen our economy.

  1. I disagree with you. He didn’t really answer your questions. He sidestepped at least half of them. I did like the “Share the Road” video! I wasn’t planning on voting for him, because of the Liberal’s current education policies, and his answers to cycling related questions certainly didn’t change my mind!
